This is an exceptionally well crafted piece, from concept through completed work. Successful art, in any medium, engages the viewer's emotions and imagination. When an artist "tells" us too much about a work less is asked of us, we are not engaged and obviously we care less about the work.  Simply put, good art leaves part of the story or meaning up to the viewer to interpret. We don't know what happened here or anything at all about the location or back story and we don't need to thanks to your subtle craft.  This is not about war, vilolence, nor even survival, as the title would suggest.  It is about the stance and motive of a warrior; the "why" of fighting and the "what for?". It is a beautifully set scene, masterfully lit and finely composed.  What wins me over, however, is the subtleness of posture and expression within both figures.  The child is not so much clinging out of fear or insecurity but is holding onto her hero with pride, almost like a trophy. The warrior, for her part, reveals a firm tenderness that in its quality calls to mind the manner in which a wolf watches over her young.  Here is fierce defense blended with gentle caretaking ... and it is blended beautifully. Warmest regards, Terry

Mm think I might be as wary of the girl as her guardian, there's something about the look in her eye... great scene, expressions and poses. The fire lighting is spot on.
