Description

For my Earth Day image I decided to feature the Long-Whiskered Owl. This owl was first discover in the cloud forests of Peru in 1997 and wasn't seen again in the wild until 2007. Measuring a little over 5 inches tall, with bright orange eyes, the wild, wispy facial feathers, these owls belong to their own genus, dubbed Xenoglaux, or "strange owl." It is believed there are 300 to 999 Long-whiskered Owls in existence. With pressure to log and build roads in the forest they inhabit this tiny owl is critically endangered and on it's way to extinction unless protections are put in place. Rendered in Poser 2010 with a Vue background without postwork. Models: Long-whiskered Owl and branch (SBRM Owls/Perching Places), foreground plants (RDNA)

Gorgeous owl. I'm sad to hear there are so few, in fact, I've never even heard of them. Beautiful render and great work on the feathers, the colors are wonderful.
