I'm wondering if I'm watching the same image most people saw when they commented? Almost everyone describes it as idyllic and peaceful, a place of happiness and tranquility, a place they long to visit. That was not the impact on me. As the title suggest, it is a place of sorrow. The sole purpose of the calmness and beauty of the surrounding is to serve as a contrasting setting to a tragedy. The boats arnt there as minor decorative items. They are the subject of the image, witnesses of some great loss. The image isnt soothing to me, it is heart breaking. Technically it is (as usual) so masterfully executed. Just one point add to what has been already said - some intriguing compositional elements in the sky – two verticals (tree tops+moon+birds on the left, Tree tops+birds on the right).Unlike the intertwined diagonals/triangles defining most of the composition and guiding the eye effortlessly within the image, these two verticals stop the motion of the eye. They focus the attention in the emptiness in and above the two boats. In emotional terms they have the same impact as a moment of silence in mourning for lost ones. They look like sentinels, standing watch over a tomb, or candles in a shrine of remembrance What a creation – technically flawless, aesthetically pleasing, emotionally overwhelming! Thanks Artur.
