Description

After 100 years the concrete is cracking, the blast doors to the ammunition rooms and the lifts and hoists for raising the shells to the guns are all slowly rusting. The huge gun pits are empty, their gigantic 12-inch guns sold for scrap years ago. Bushes and weeds grow blocking the commanding officer's once magnificent view of ships sailing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward Vancouver and Seattle. The mission of this old Coastal Artillery fortification began in 1910 and ended 35 years later toward the end of World War II. Today Battery Kinzie is only one of many tourist attractions drawing people from all over the USA and beyond to Fort Worden and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The site is open to climb around to your heart's content. Our camp site was less than 1/4 mile away. Note: Here's what one of the guns would have looked like on its' disappearing gun carriage. There is something intriging about rust and ruin...sort of like old "haunted houses" when you were a kid:)

Lovely collage of this fort Bill, is a shame that things like this that attract tourists are left to rust away.. guess they always will be as cost would be way to much to maintain.. :-( Excellent posting!!

Old soldiers never die, they just fade away (General Douglas MacArthur). Age and oxidation have really taken their toll on this ancient fortification, as depicted in this fine sequence of fotos, Bill.

Really nice photos of this old fortification, Bill. In a way it's sad to see these places slowly decay, but in another view, it is slowly returning to nature. I would truly love to spend a day there. Excellent collage!

Excellent captures of this old gun placement. We have several of these around our coastline too but they have never been used.
