Description
Smile ... it happens in a flash, but its memory can last a lifetime. Over the past few months I have been crafting together a library of expressions; I find this to be exceptionally fun work. It's no news that I am within an eduring love affair with the human face, the portrayal of which brings me great pleasure. The success or failure of a portrait will always come down to the quality of expression. Portrait viewing is very similar to real life; we tend to intuitively recognize a phony expression when we see one. Conversely, if we get an expression just right these pixels we sculpt with will light up ... as if animated by spirit. I can not offer up any "secret" to great expressions but I suggest that you build them as slowly as possible. Adjust the dials one degree at a time. Even if it looks like nothing is changing a single degree can make all the difference. Don't only pay attention to the mouth and the eyes, the facial muscles are critical to expression and these are not always easy to notice when we are leaning into the screen adjusting dials. Be subtle with expressions, allow the viewer to "read into" your faces; human survival instinct over thousands of years has taught us how to do this very well. When we are focusing on tweaking one facial feature at a time we tend to miss the effect this has upon the whole face. Lean back in your chair and every once in a while generatre a "draft" render at low resolution just to see the whole expression objectively. Enjoy making faces! Don't enter into this stage of your work with reservations. It is often surprising how expression craft will reflect the mood we are in while performing it. All of life is like a mirror, we get the best results when we smile at it. Keep those creative fires burning! Terry

That is excellent advice, I am saving this off for future reference, in case I ever work that closely with characters. I have played around with expressions but I moved the dials too far and well, grotesque describes my creation very politely. You are mastering this art very well. Beautiful!

"..the seconds best thing you can do with your lips.." uhuh :) The best thing you can do with your lips is enjoyed even more when the eyes are closed, the Champagne is chilled and the music is soft and sensuous.. :) Yes, you are so right about the dials.. Sometimes even the slightest turn can make a world of difference!
