Description

The Valley of the Giants is approx. 20 miles west Falls City, Oregon. It is one of the few areas of old growth forest left in Oregon that is accessable. It is difficult to find. You have to drive through logging roads back into BLM land. Sometimes you cannot get through because some of the many gates may be locked. I was really excited to get an invitation to go with a group of people that knew how to get there. The tree in this photo fell in 1982 when it was 600 years old. I begged my husband to get in the picture so the size of the fallen giant would show. I plan to post a few more photos of The Valley of the Giants. Thank you for looking!

Did it fall by itself, or was it cut down? Either way, it is amazing to think of the changes to civilization during its lifetime. Thank you for posing your husband there — that was needed! At one time there were trees in Stanley Park in Vancouver much larger than this tree, but a recent windstorm toppled all of them.

A famous specimen is "Big Guy" which at one time was the second largest Douglas-fir known standing in Oregon. Before "Big Guy" was blown down by a wind storm in 1982, it was estimated to be over 600 years old, stood approximately 230 feet (70 m) above the forest floor, and had an estimated 36.5-foot (11.1 m) girth.

We have a valley of the giants here in Northern California but thankfully it is easier to get to...only that means tourists are constantly getting in the way of a decent shot. Great shot and I hope you post more of this magical place.

Big trees fascinate me too. Thanks to your husband for giving us a sense of scale. How did he get up there???

The grooves in the bark were deep enough to climb, but it was awkward.

Holy Frak that's one big tree! There are so few old growth forests around and that's more than a shame. The idea that something can live 600 years is really incredible, and now that it's fallen it's still an impressive sight! I love the moss growing in the part that looks as if it's been cut (was it cut after falling to determine its age?) It looks like there are mushrooms or something growing in the moss too! I'd love a close view of this, but that's just because I have a thing for moss and mushrooms, bugs, and wacky macro shots of obscure things. This is really great work. I like the color sense in this. Thank your husband for me for posing to provide a bit of scale.
