Description

Characteristic for the Meuse hedges is that the landscape has been divided in a large number of small plots which of each other has separated by hawthorns and luge thorn hedges. The hawthorn half cutted and to the they side are conducted, so that the shrubs in each other grow (these become ' leggen' called). There where cutted are, new branches grow so that there a complete dense hedge arises. Because the hedges are braided this way dense in each other, forms them an impenetrable dissidence. They serve especially as a plot separation and veekering, but help also at outside to love carnivore. Every time if the river meadows run under water, helps the hedges with catching silt; if water withdraws himself, the silt remains behind as a result of which the floor in the area is very fertile. The Meuse hedges lie in the river meadows of the Meuse in the area at the villages Vierlingsbeek, Boxmeer and Oeffelt. The secular landscape is unique in West-Europa, and the Meuse hedges form a particular ecosystem where a number of rare planting and at prevents; there come for example mufflers for and the dense hedges form also a very well breeding ground for all kinds of birds. History: Julius Caesar wrote in its book the Bello Gallico (book II, paragraph 17) concerning the way in which the locals broke away from their agriculture plots by means of twisted hawthorn hedges. He gave to proof of its irritation, which had been fed thereby also by the fact that the hedges formed a wall which he could pass with its army only difficultly. Its description is the oldest well-known written indication of the area. The Meuse hedges were find in former days along all river meadows of the Meuse. With the invention of pivot wire (and later also fright wire) however the perdition for the hedges started as a plot separation. Especially shortly after the second world war there was all of a sudden a surplus to pivot wire and the braid hedge has then everywhere disappeared nearly as plot dissidence. The Meuse hedge area on the border of Noord-Brabant and Limburg has been however kept remained. tfv
