Description

While visiting the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks, this 98 year old railroad bridge stands just a little ways off to the east. That is a 500 ton counterweight hanging off the back! "The Salmon Bay Bridge 4 is a bascule type bridge that crosses the ship canal near the Ballard Locks. It was built in 1912 when the Army Corp of Engineers began construction of the locks. Previously there was a wooden trestle that crossed here." Here's the details Bill:) "Down by the Locks" thumb_2054210.jpg

I love a good bascule bridge, and you can usually tell the "old" ones because all of their counterweights and bridge-bits are on top. The snazzy "modern" ones in Chicago all have their counterweights and stuff underneath, but maybe it's not modern so much as just urban and down-town-ish. Anyway, I just love this shot. As I looked at it for the first time, my mind went off in its usual, odd associative tangent and I thought of Madeline Khan in History of the World: Part One as the Roman emperess, choosing an escort to the midnight orgy. Once her choice was made, the assembled troops she chose from all marched out after their sergeant gave the "Forward harch!" order. She looked to her administrative aide and said: "I just love forward harch, don't you?" Anyway, that scene came into my head with her saying: "I just love a bascule bridge, don't you?" To which my reply would be, wholeheartedly: "Oh yes!" What Madeline Khan has to do with a bridge, I don't know, but there you have it. This is a fantastic shot. I love the details and the overall composition. What details. The bridges are amazing. The strut work is hypnotic. The sense of scale is impressive. And YAY! Railroad bridges. There's something deliciously Midwestern about them...I think it's the fact that so many railroad lines criscross this area, proving the need to move a huge volume of really heavy stuff from one location to another. Now I'm rambling, so I'm going to shut up, but before doing so, I'll say that this is a great shot!

Cool design of the bridge and to see it in the open position as a contrast.
