Description

Captured back on 3/6/09, very early in the morning, about 1.25 miles/2.0 kilometers from my desultory digs. ---------------- Lantana is a genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants, native to tropical regions of the Americas, Africa and existing as an imported plant in numerous areas, especially in the Australian-Pacific region. The genus includes both herbaceous plants and shrubs growing to 0.5-2 m tall. Their common names are shrub verbenas or lantanas. Lantana's aromatic flower clusters (called umbels) are a mix of red, orange, yellow, or blue and white florets. Other colors exist as new varieties are being selected. The flowers typically change color as they mature, resulting in inflorescences that are two- or three-colored. The umbels measure a consistent 1.625-inches/41.275-millimeters across. Source: Wikipedia encyclopedia. These blooms remind me of bacon and eggs, or at least bacon bits and eggs. They must be very hardy plants because these beauties were growing in a long row of bushes, just a sidewalk width away from a street and exposed to the rumble, roar, toxic fumes and winds generated by perpetual heavy traffic going by. Even so, they seem to thrive under those adverse conditions. Sayonara, thankx for dropping by, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

Apparently they are very toxic for live stock such as cattle and sheep! But oh, they are too beautiful! I had a feast in Swaziland where they just grow everywhere! Lovely collage Harry!

I love lantana; the colours are wonderful, and they do seem to be awfully hardy. They're used as ground cover in a lot of public places. I once saw a house in California that had them as a hedge, quite sturdy and obviously a result of years of pruning into a long block, and it was absolutely gorgeous in the summer. Excellent collage of increasingly close views!

I wanted to comment on these for a while...you caught the exotic nature of this flower, and when you told us that they're living near a major traffic-way (with all the fumes, toxicity, etc) I'm not surprised. They look like the kind of flowers that can survive anything. In your larger-to-macro montage, they look like they're almost pasted together from parts; and your final shots really bring that out---an almost ricky-ticky construction that's almost too put-together to have come from nature. A really bizarre flower! And you got its nature in every shot; plus in the second & third, we get to see its different hues & its wonderful primal buds. Yes, like bacon & eggs---and almost like a tinker-toy construction. You made them look positively exotic! I can't quite explain it, but I see a similar eye at work as I see in your car captures: Going for the most visually expressive elements...I'll look for these, if we have them in Chicago. (And I'll check out your #1 soon, too!)
