Roger Waters in Montreal (Pink Floyd)
Trente années se sont écoulées, mais l'album The Wall a encore une signification particulière dans l'univers du rock... et pour son cocréateur Roger Waters.
C'est ainsi que pour commémorer l'anniversaire de The Wall, Waters présentera en tournée, à l'automne, la musique de l'album concept, avec une nouvelle mise en scène qui présentera l'histoire -librement inspirée de sa propre vie - à une nouvelle génération.La tournée s'amorcera le 15 septembre à Toronto et se poursuivra jusqu'en décembre, avec des arrêts à la Place Banque Scotia à Ottawa (17 octobre) et au Centre Bell de Montréal (19 octobre).
Roger Waters ne souhaite cependant pas simplement dépoussiérer le spectacle que Pink Floyd présentait il y a des décennies.
Il affirme en effet que ce qu'il trouve excitant dans l'idée de remettre en scène The Wall est la façon dont la nouvelle technologie lui permet de faire des choses auxquelles il ne pouvait que rêver dans les années 1980 et 1990.
La tournée promet d'offrir une expérience théâtrale grandiose, mais ce qui importe le plus, pour Waters, est le commentaire politique et social de l'album, qui est encore pertinent aujourd'hui, selon lui.
«Quand nous le faisions, à l'époque, c'était après la fin de la guerre du Vietnam, et nous sommes actuellement au beau milieu de guerres en Irak et en Afghanistan. Il y a dans The Wall un message anti-guerre très puissant qui existait à l'époque et qui existe encore aujourd'hui», a-t-il déclaré.
Waters prévoit rendre hommage, pendant le spectacle, aux soldats qui ont perdu la vie non seulement dans les récentes guerres, mais aussi dans d'autres conflits.
Pour le musicien, la série de concerts marquera sans doute la fin de sa carrière sur scène. «Je ne suis plus aussi jeune que je l'étais. Je ne suis pas comme B.B. King ou Muddy Waters, a admis l'homme de 66 ans. Mon ami Eric Clapton (...) jouera de la guitare et sera sur scène jusqu'au jour de sa mort, parce que c'est ce qu'il fait.»
«Je ne suis pas un grand chanteur ni un grand instrumentiste ou quoi que ce soit, mais j'ai toujours la passion et j'ai quelque chose à dire. J'ai un chant du cygne en moi et je crois que (la prochaine tournée) le sera», a-t-il conclu.
