Description
You can compare this to "How Brown Was My Valley". We are looking from south to north. (I noticed this morning that 14 out of my last 15 pix have been of Mars. No wonder my friends & family accuse me of being a space cadet!)

Unfortunately, I'm working on the raw edge of detail for this elevation map of Mariner Valley. There just isn't any more detail to be had.

great terrain, but it's really too blur... Try to sharpen it a lot :p

No, I doubt very much that any stars would be visible except for possibly Venus. Artistic license & the desire to fill a blank void are the motivation. However, I think I agree that the stars detract rather than add. As you say, at this level of realism, it is better to just make the versimilitude uniform.

Don't worry about the artistic stuff. It is annoying to repetively see all those starfighters or spaceship in front of a very cloudy/starry nebulae or galaxy, not even at scale. People have been fooled by those long exposure photography of deep sky and the scifi folklore. Anyway. You might be interested to compare your pictures with those from that guy from the french mars society. http://www.astrosurf.com/planete-mars/goursac/marineris.html
