Description

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" This poem is carved on a tablet on the inner walls of the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands. The United States has not always lived up to these words, but we have been and continue to be strengthened by the influx of people from all over the world. She is a great lady and has come to stand for hope and freedom for immigrants entering our country. She was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States and celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986. She was designed by Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi with help from Alexandre Gustave Eiffel who designed the interior structural elements needed to make her a reality. It was a joint project, with the American people building and funding the pedestal and the French people doing the same for the statue. Funding difficulties arose in both France and America, with various forms of entertainment, auctions, exhibitions and prize fights used to raise money. (statueofliberty.org) This was taken while I was on a boat trip around the Island of Manhattan. Such fun! It seemed a good choice for my first posting from New York. Every day in New York I walked my tail off and came back to my sister's apartment physically exhausted and mentally comatose. (But having a wonderful time!) After New York, my sister and I went to Lake Charles, Louisiana for about a week. We had a great time with family. I'm very disturbed about the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico. I hope it gets contained and cleaned up soon. Though it doesn't look very hopeful at the moment. I'm now back in San Antonio, with a lot of catching up to do on my commenting. Thanks for viewing and for previous comments and favs!

When I was a boy you were still allowed up in the torch. That was some years ago. Nice POV here with the sail boat.

It's great that you had a wonderful time and time with family, and it's even better that you're back here! YAY! And you come back with a stirring shot. I'm not a patriot in that sense of the word, but I love everything that this image is supposed to represent, and you got it with such clear dignity and grace. What really grabs me is the composition in general: the old-style sailing ship and the Statue of Liberty all in the same shot. Marvelous. Superb.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" (Offer not good in Arizona!) Excellent capture of "the Lady" and the schooner is the perfect accompanyment for your picture.

This is fantastic! As a native New Yorker, it's always good to see the old place-even if I haven't liked there since 1971. I, too, remember when you could go up into the torch, and the view was fantastic. This is a wonderful shot and I'm glad you had a good time in NYC. As for the Gulf, my parents have lived in Sarasota since 1995 and I am extremely familiar with this beautiful part of the country. I can't believe they can't get this situation under control. It's making me so angry and disgusted it's almost making me physically ill. I say we all boycott BP!!!
