Description

ROLL-OUT Tasked by a new American President to get America back into space, Robert L Carter, NASA’s Head of Operations and Administration has worked like a modern day engineering messier to resurrect NASA using ideas and concepts from NASA’s past, to create its programmes for its future. His first programme, the creation of an orbital space shuttle fleet has seen the old space shuttles Atlantis, Discovery and Endeavour re-engineered and launched back into space to be the construction workhouses for the programmes which are to follow. Carter knows that with the shuttles now permanently based in Earth orbit he is going to need a means to get his NASA personnel into space and back again using means other than the shuttles which have been used in the past. To this end Carter resurrects an element of one of the last programmes that NASA was working on, and which it was hoped would be used after the end of the space shuttle programme. ARES 1 the booster derived from a combination of both space shuttle and Saturn 5 booster technology was to be one of the key elements which were intended to make up NASA’s Constellation Programme, the programme which was originally intended to get America back into space after the end of the space shuttle programme sometime between 2015 and 2020. Working with his engineers and technicians Carter re-engineer’s the old designs for the ARES 1 to give him the booster he will need to get his people back into space to operate the new orbital shuttle fleet and return them home again safely. His ARES 1 re-engineering programme has been on-going since the President approved his plans for NASA, and has managed to keep pace with the upgrades to the new orbital shuttle fleet. The plans are so far advanced that virtually one month to the day that the space shuttle Endeavour took to the skies for the last time, the ARES 1 rolls out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA Kennedy Space Centre for its first test flight. Atop the booster is the first of Carter’s revolutionary new designs, the Crew Return Capsule or CRC, which has the capacity to carry up to six crew members into low Earth orbit and return them safely to Earth. Fashioned along the same lines as the old Apollo Command Module and the proposed Crew Exploration Vehicle or CEV from the Constellation Programme, Carter and his people have worked to upgraded the design to enable it to be used to get crews into space and back.

I have really enjoyed your series about the reemergence of NASA. I take it that Obama is not President in your story because I don't believe you will ever see NASA going anywhere with that person in the white house. I hope that for both our sake that we see NASA become once more the leaders in human exploration outside of LEO. I hope that we can still get back to the moon in the next 10 years but, we need the support of congress to fund our return to the moon and beyond. Keep up the excellent pictures my friend. Cheers, David
