The lighting and "palette" remind me of a painting by one of the Dutch masters. In fact, this portrait reminds me of the "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Vermeer. I think it is the pose and the lighting. The girl herself looks much happier than the girl in Vermeer's painting though. She was probably tired from hours of posing.
