Description

Throttle-up and Separation To get his crews, and the payloads which will follow into low Earth orbit, Robert L Carter, NASA's Head of Operations and Administration has devised a totally new means of boosting his spacecraft into low Earth orbit. Called the "Inertia Method" Crater has theorised that by creating boosters with a variable thrust capacity he can use this method to quite literally sling-shot his human and cargo payloads into space. It is a method now about to be tested for the first time. Using readings relayed by the spacecraft to Mission Control Carter knows when the ARES 1 booster is 90 seconds away from fuel depletion and engine shut-down. When this exact moment arrives Carter's people send a signal which throttle's-up the booster to 110% thrust whilst at exactly the same moment firing a series of explosive bolts which will allow the CRC to separate from its booster. As the engine on the ARES 1 splutters and dies from lack of fuel, the CRC now free of the heavy booster separates and hurtles onward toward low Earth orbit.

Excellent render and presentation. Everything is looking good! I would like to see a more close-up view of the CRC at some point. Cheers, David

Nice image! I'm a littler confused by the Ares 1 though, since it is/was/might be a two stage rocket, with a solid first stage (which can't be throttled up on command) and a liquid hydrogen/oxygen second stage. Or is this just a completely new design that just looks like an Ares-1?
