I have always liked 'llIustration' and tend to produce it either as Cover Art or Sequential imagery. The former is probably the more challenging because of the balance that needs to be struck between form and content, decoration and narrative. Cover Art, like the short story, gets a limited shot at indicating what lies beneath the cover. My current preoccupation has been described, and I think aptly, as 'nostalgic sci fi and pulp'. And someone also suggested that it might be a little too late to revive the 'adventure genre'.
Stylistically, I'm keen on the commercial illustration of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publication (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics). There is so much creativity and artistic competence to found on the covers and within the pages of even the most mundane examples.
It is over the last 7 years that I have started to use, and like, digital media. My working methods are still a little too intuitive and involve the usual squinting and standing back that one associates with traditional media, but I am enjoying making imagery more than ever and would now like to explore the possibilities of illustrating written stories (preferably by working with an author).
Interests: Commercial illustration and sequential imagery of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publications (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics).
I am here for: Artistic interests. www.mikefyles.co.uk

Awesome image, as usual. I like the different take on the character. The colors are fantastic and perfectly suited for the "Noir" atmosphere announced in your cool "Marvel Noir" logo. You definitely convey the sense that this is one of their famous alternate-version stories/series that they've been doing over the past few years. I do see, however, two minor issues of clutter creating possible problems, though. The first is minor: the weapon (or whatever) appearing over Iron Man's right hand makes it look like he has an extra finger that's pointing up. It's minor and easily dismissed once I take a better look at the hand, but it does create a split-second of confusion in my mind. The second issue also stems from my mind... which I must admit is particularly dirty. The POV is VERY cool for this image; it definitely conveys the sense that he's skulking about and that contributes to the noir feel. However, our eyes are basically at crotch level and there is a long, straight line in the background lined up perfectly with the aforementioned crotch. To be really blunt, it's a little phallic, which is something I doubt you were going for in this image. This is one time when I suspect that a simpler background is called for. I do like the building detail, but I'm afraid that it's just a little rude when considered as part of the entire composition. Perhaps if there were a series of horizontal bands (perhaps different floors/balconies?) instead, it might spare my dirty mind just a little bit. Of course, you know I'm just nitpicking. The colors, composition, and detail (love that bit of texture around his neck) are great. Bravo on another grand slam!

Outstanding work as usual. It warms my heart to know that some future Rendo artist might one day be aging his work to look like one of your covers!

A really interesting composition Mike -well thought out. Not sure what you were going for with this one, but the Iron Man banner looks a bit jagged at the resolution you posted. Gary

Really nice Mike. I picked up Iron Man Noir #2 today, but so far can't find #1.

Great pic! I really like your design for this "noir" suit, between oldschool, like Rocketeer, and actual designs. Nice POV and colors choice!
