This made me think of a book, three books. "The Gormenghast Trilogy" by Mervyn Peake. It has the dark, brooding presence of Gormenghast castle and I can imagine numerous tunnel like hallways reaching deep inside in tortuous twist and turns, from this outer shell. I've always pictured Gormenghast Castle as looking almost like a living being with little plan as if it grew in the night when no one was watching. This has that feel to it. It seems to be waiting, ready to swallow the unwary. Excellent texture and atmosphere. Wonderful image! Oops, just realised I had a typo on the author's name. I don't mind a misspelled word (I do it all the time) but I hate to misspell some one's name! :)

This brings a lot of thoughts to mind when I look at this, and that's always a good thing. I'd seen it earlier, but had to actually digest what I was seeing and process what I was feeling. In a sense, this strikes me as a photograph; once I lived in a small Czech town, not too far from the border of Austria, and the town was known for its disproportionately large castle (as if disproportionately large castles are a "strange" thing in the Czech Republic...when they built castles in the Czech Lands, back in the day, they built whole frikkin cities!) Anyway, this reminded me of the many walks I'd take when local bars were closing and locals were...well...singing in the streets in a language I scarcely understood. As most of the town existed within castle walls, there was a lot of "castle" architecture all around: gray, grungy stuff like this image, sometimes tinged with moss, sometimes littered with dead flies in spiderwebs, and sometimes colored with unspeakable fluids best left outside of description. What made me think of all of that was the texture of the piece itself, and the way it resembles old cobblestones or roofing shingles left to the element for maybe a century too long. That's a good thing, by the way: this image evokes that, and really puts a wonderful spin on reality, memory, and everything in between--at least for me--and well...I love this piece. The textures are quite marvelous and the play of light and dark really intrigues me. In a nutshell, this rocks!
