Description
This is a World War 2 pill box built to defend our country against a German invasion. The slits were for our home defense to shoot their guns from. This is one in a 60 mile line, across the south west peninsula, which included large square blocks of concrete designed to foil the enemy tanks. The invasion never came because Hitler turned his attention to Russia. A lot of the boxes and blocks remain today.

Like the subtle camouflage provided by the foliage...which probably wasn't so close in 1939-40. The only things we have like this in the USA are numerous old coastal artillery fortiifications on bluffs over looking all our major harbors both on the east and west coasts and in Hawaii. No German or Japanese ships or submarines ever tested these fortifications (6", 10", 12" guns and huge mortars) but their very presence detered these combatants from trying their luck.

And now its a cycle path, how times change. Nice bit of local history Jeff, and a great picture to illustrate it.

A beautiful photo. Also the mood and atmosphere. I like how he covered with all the green. We also have those bunkers. There's one in our street. And the funny thing was, in the street where I was born, there was one too. (very close to our house)

A reminder that not all historic structures embrace the beauty and majesty we often see - Some still summon stark rememberence of darker times - both past and present !

How unexpected on such a lovely, quite country lane to see reminders of war. Glad it passed unused. Wonderful shot.

I think they have taken away all those that were left in Bournemouth. Shame some towns have chosen to remove these pieces of history.
