Description

I took this shot of the USS Drum (SS-228) from the superstructure of the USS Alabama in the 1990s prior to 1998. The Drum took damage from Hurricane Georges in '98 and it was decided to move her to a concrete cradle on the land next to the Alabama. She's still there today despite taking more damage from Huricane Katrina in 2005. The Drum is the oldest surviving Gato class submarine from WWII. She made 13 war patrols and sank 15 Japanese ships and served as a lifeguard for downed aviators during the Pacific island campaign.

Hmmmmm, I was under the impression that all WWII US subs were named after fish. Was I wrong? There could be a Drum fish for all I know:) Like your background info on this embattled monument to all who served in the "Silent Service".

Yes, Bill, there is a "drum" fish, and that's about all I know about fish!
