Description

When Terragen 2 was first released, I thought I would be able to do almost anything with it and I could easily pick up where I left off with Terragen Classic. That was not to be. More, I was lost in it and still am to some measure. It was not until I started using files created by others - who amazingly seemed to know what they were doing – that I began so see to a very small extent how things worked. At first, the node networks made little or no sense to me. They were spaghetti-like jumbles of boxes and wires, with controls that seemingly either did nothing at all or far too much. That is until I learned that sometimes less is more with Terragen 2. I suppose if I wanted, I could be taking an easier route by replicating natural-looking scenes or simply slapping objects onto flat ground. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But I’d never be satisfied with doing it. I want mountains that don’t look entirely like mountains, canyons that don’t look entirely like canyons, skies that don’t look entirely like skies – and I still haven’t been able to get a non-blue sky that suits me. It’s all baby steps, I suppose and I need to have patience. So far this is as good as it gets with me. I used cyphyr’s Monterey Canyon and Glen5700’s fractalized voronoi files, both from Planetside’s File Sharing forum, and both of which I heavily tweaked. I stuck a couple of worlds in the sky to only keep the boredom factor at a minimum. Thanks also to choronr (Bob) for inspiring and urging me on. And thanks for looking in!

Great to see you're experimenting now with good results. So many elements to adjust - like the light and decay. They alone can change the whole picture. Rich, please keep on - yes, it takes longer; but, before you know it, satisfaction is to be had.

Great work,i could spend a week climbing on that rock face. I almost gave up on TG2 several times,as i was so deeply rooted in Terragen classic. The beauty of digital art is that you can experiment to your hearts content, and when it all goes wrong-as it frequently does!!,you can reload the original file and try again.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Rich! TG2 really drives me crazy. But as you told me earlier this year - it's worth it in the end, and this result here is proof for that. I really like this rock surface, looks great and very natural. I'm just beginning to understand how to connect nodes when inserting a clip file - oh well.... ;-) However - congrats to this great render, and keep on going!

Oh yes, I agree with you and Badsue. At the moment I gave TG2 up because I have problems with the content files. I do not understand that a wonderful program has problems with something like ÜÄÖ or other things like space tabs. But I see you are on the right way to create awesome landscapes, Rich keep up the excellent work!!!!

Me too I'm part of the "Gave-Up-TG2-Club". My admiration for those who can do something good with it is huge...

Excellent Rich, one of your best with TG 2. I wish Planetside would make TG 2 a little easier to use as well as working on keeping the render times down. I'm sure this will be sorted out soon.

Fantastic! Awesome terrain. Great POV!!!! The reason I have given up on T2 is the looooooooooooooooooong rendertime! I can't afford a full version and this is my "punishment". ;-) Corrie

TG2 has so much potential and it is with the efforts of people like you that will make this the "Got To" software someday! AS to the objects, yeah they are easy, but to do them realistically is much harder and very rewarding!! The rockface in this is pretty nice and with a few, ..... objects 8^), on the top of the canyon would be very realistic indeed!!!

You did such a wonderful job, Rich..... keep on with TG 2... you are such a wonderful artist here at Rero.... Last year I thought : Oh, what a sh..... is that (TG2) ???? sorry, but I was so angry with that programme.... I deleted it several days later !!! Now I think in another way: Bob said, you are now ready for TG2..... and he said it alright .... the programme looks easier for me than last year..... but it's a long and hard way with that programme......(especially that node network has its hints and problems) but Bob encourages me to keep on with it.... You can only learn something by doing and exercising !!! In this sense: Go on with it !!!!! Greetings to you

Without procedural erosion i gave up on terragen 2 a long time ago. Nothing will ever look good or real enough without it. It's all static and fake looking rather then a dynamic aged landscape. This is the one major set back with this software.
