Description

The Cedar Fire was a human-caused wildfire which burned out of control through a large area of Southern California in October 2003. Driven by Santa Ana Winds, the fire burned 280,278 acres (1,134.2 km2) 2,820 buildings (including 2,232 homes) and had killed 15 people including one firefighter before being contained on November 3, making it the largest fire in recorded California history. The Cedar Fire burned to within a mile of my house. It was very scary experience. My house and yard was covered by two inches of fine ash making it look like it had just snowed. After the roads were re-openned my wife and I drove through the area where this shot was taken. Unfortunately, that was during my hiatus from photography but I can tell you this area looked like a moonscape - burned to the ground, the entire area covered in fine, grey ash. The larger trees where the only things left standing and many of the later had to be removed while a few are starting to come back. This shot shows how nature has been reborn and also shows how these fires get so large, note the dried grass and small bushes that act like kindling. Enjoy

Most of these wild fires are provoked by humans... it's more than enough to throw a cigarette butt through the window on that dried grass, and the fire is on... Great image, good composition!

I have been in a similar situation living in California, living in such a dry area and the high winds there is always that danger. I lived in a town surrounded by hills, so I can remmeber so many times the large fires getting very close. Good to see the trees coming back to life.

This is quite haunting! Wildfires are always such awesome, terrifying spectacles, and it's terrible that people were unable to escape with their lives. Worse that it was a human-caused fire! This is, however, a marvelous photograph; I like the desolation giving way to new life. Those skeletal trees are quite compelling, and there's something about the feel of a dead tree that just seems so alien; I think it's that they're so dry, but you still see them as trees and not just wood. I like the intensity of the light as well. This is a really great shot.
