Description

These shots are taken from Boyes Drive, looking east along the sweeping Muizenberg Beach. You can see all the surfers in the waves and these spotters are trained to look for the lurking shapes of the Great White sharks below the surface. They then warn NSRI and surf lifesavers through use of their cell phones, of any sharks visible in the area. "Shark Spotters is a pioneering shark safety programme that has attracted international and local attention because of the novel way it seeks to find a solution to potential conflicts between sharks and people. Adopted by the City of Cape Town in 2004 in response to a spate of shark bite incidents and increased shark sightings, Shark Spotting is now the primary shark safety programme used in Cape Town." (To read more:- www.sharkspotters.org.za) These were captured a month ago, the temperature has since dived - even less people on the beach now! Happy spotting! Clive

Wow, and they can see them from up that high? Good eyes needed, I guess! Don't look away for a second! And what a view!

What a lovely beach! But the edge of the beauty is dulled a bit by the knowledge!

I had a nightmare about sharks last night I never have dreams like that.. I never knew there were shark spotters, glad to know especially after my dream, and I don't normally remember much from my dreams but this one is hard to shake. Kudos to those that do this to aid others against dangers.

Nice job - I think they recognize the sharks at the latest when some people leave the water shouting out loud "SHAAAAAARK!" lol

They could sit on a hill around here all day long and look for sharks, but they'd get bored and have to get a coffee and call it a day. What a fascinating program! It's a simple idea, but I bet it works just fine.
