Description

Consortium Armored Cruiser. An Orion’s Arm future history project image. This scene reflects events which towards the end of the +750 year mark on my future history timeline. The System States War is the event which divides events of the first half of my future history from events of the second half. Future History Timeline Context Link: Orion’s Arm Future History Timeline. Space Warship Classification What happens if you design a warship that is equally balanced with regards to armor, guns, and Delta V? You get a Cruiser. There is a tradeoff between armor, guns, and Delta V. Each comes at the expense of another. The Frigate is the smallest thing that can be armed with guns capable of doing long range or planetary bombardment. The Destroyer may have less armament than a frigate; it's job is to shoot down threats to the bigger ships in the battle fleet. The Cruiser is a frigate that's generally got more armament, more armor, and more survivability. It usually has greater endurance. The Armored Cruiser trades endurance for enough armor to maybe survive a hit from a Battleship without being mission killed, and usually has the same number of guns as the cruiser with heavier throw weights. The Battleship has Massive Firepower and the armor to stand up to it. Image Composition Notes: Background is a Celestia screen capture of Saturn. Armored Cruiser is my own Bryce creation designed and rendered in Bryce 6.3. The base texture is a modification of Stone Mason’s SCI FI Cylinder Prop – this is the base texture for most of my spacecraft. As always thank you for your interest, thoughtful comments, and encouragement.

I like the hammer-head design with nuclear engines in the aft? VERY cool! The design has a really realistic 'feel' to it. Well done.

Great model and narration. The astronaut on space walk looks a little big though!

Wonderful model and render. The scale of the astronaut makes the ship look smaller then I am guessing you intend? Great work on the lighting - the details really show in the full view.

0rest4wicked & dbrv6, There are two astronauts in the scene included for the specific purpose of scale – you need to view full size to see both. It is evident from your comments, you did not. The astronaut on the extreme right is within 50 feet of the camera. The second astronaut, located below and to the right of the vertical blade of the forward hull, is more than a hundred feet from the camera – and is still quite distant from the spacecraft, on the order of 600 feet or more, being closer to the camera than to the spacecraft. The forward tetrahedral shaped hull of the vehicle is 475 feet from tip to tip. Total vehicle length is 985 feet. To visualize in scale think WWII aircraft carrier and you will be in the right ballpark.
