Description

At first, I didn't notice. I was busy to take a shot from the opposite side, and especially the Pompeian-style neo-renaissance decorations neatly decorating the two elegant arches of the balaustrade. Only later I noticed that the group of visitors looking at the skeletons in the cases could be seen as the final (?) point of an evolutionary chart. In fact, the story of the National Museum in Prague and its very rich collections is parallel to that of the 19th century sciences, the development of Darwin's theories and Positivism. Actually, many of the cases are the original ones, especially those containing a huge collection of fossils. The largest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic, the National Museum houses several floors of permanent exhibits. This monumental, neo-renaissance building was designed by Josef Schultz as an architectural symbol of the Czech National Revival. Construction lasted from 1818 to 1891. Thank you for your kind comments.

Sandra, it's been so long since I've been here; the last visits (a few months ago) got interrupted again & again by life; and then I disappeared for all but a dedi for friend Koosie...To say I've seen everything is true, but not much where responses are concerned, because missing the dialogue that your work creates was one of the real losses of my absence. Your Prague series is but one example of how you turn a visit---near or far---into an exploration of the soul & psyche. I didn't choose this as my image today because it was better than all the rest, but simply because it was representative. I can only do one image per gallery today (though I hope to be back soon); but yours is one of those galleries where choosing is almost impossible. But I choose this because 1) you communicate so much through composition, postwork, etc. Meaning, the shot is meticulously framed to show the two views you wanted, the arches as well as ornament beneath the windows are presented almost as if they, too, were part of the scientific displays behind them. They become part of the exhibit, here. 2) The colors are captured in fine contrast---between the bluish cloistered feel of the galleries, and the bright almost pastel hues of the walls, etc. (And fine shadows under the arches. Photographically, I really like those.) 3) You seem to have postworked it so you've flattened the image a bit, with some embossing or bas relief---which not only gives it a slightly artifact-like presence (just right for the artifact-like feel of all museums), but which makes this feel like a study in a book, fitting not only for a scientific display, but for the rising spirit of inquiry of those 19th C. scientists (Darwin included). A very intuitive touch, in other words. And 4) because the movement between the two windows, with people in the left, makes the very connection you wanted. The piece has commentary on several levels---as so much of your work does---and, with your postwork and the vivid hues, it's also a very fun image. More thought provoking work from you, and proof once again why this gallery is a journey of mind, eye & heart, and always communicating wonder & joy at all you see. A real delight, and I hope to be back here soon.

When I saw the thumbnail it was the shape of the arches that drew me to choose this image. What a delightful surprise when I opened it and saw all the other rich detail and meaning! I love the interaction between the exhibit and the people and the idea of them as an end (up to now anyway) to the evolutionary journey. I like the figure on the far left. Something about her stance and silhouette made me think of pictures of Royalty of an earlier age. She seemed to be watching over the whole scene and presenting it to you. Very interesting work filled with beauty and insight!
