Description

On my third full day in New York, my sister Leslie had to work for 3 1/2 hours. She works near Battery Park so we rode in on the train and subway together and then I spent the hours while she worked in Battery Park where I took 498 pictures. This one shows Castle Clinton, the round building in the distance. It was one of a dozen forts built to help protect the New York Harbor, was built shortly before the War of 1812, and was originally called the Southwest Battery. Its history includes being the place where Jenny Lind made her American debut, having new inventions demonstrated there including the telegraph, Colt revolving rifles, steam-powered fire engines, and underwater electronic explosives, and being an immigration landing depot from 1855 to 1890. It also housed an aquarium from 1896 to 1941. (Information from nps.gov) Thanks for viewing and for previous comments and favs.

I'll have to tell Hugh about the number of shots. He thought it excessive that I took 730 in our 2 weeks in Ireland. I'd have taken more if I could. Many were taken by the process of walking ahead of Hugh and his mother, Althea, taking pictures until they passed me, then catching up again. Luckily, at 84, she's a slow walker. I promise to post some as soon as I figure out how and resize some. We had unseasonably beautiful weather, especially the second week. Call me before your birthday Wednesday and I'll try to post one for it.

So glad your finally sharing more pics of your trip Lucinda, and this one shows off a place I'd love to visit myself. Castle Clinton seems to have such a rich history and seems to be a place you could spend hours looking over. Thanks as always for your thoughts behind the photos, they really do bring them to life for me.

What a great shot! I love the composition and the warm atmosphere of the lighting. The detail in the foreground bench is wonderful. Thanks for the history too, I didn't know all that. I look forward to the other 497 shots.

History lies heavy on New York City not least because there are so many family memories there. This is a fantastic atmospheric image. Except for the modern buildings on the left it could be a scene from another era. Excellent work. But 498 pictures? You might want to cut down on the caffeine.

Cool shot of the New York skyline at dusk, Lucinda, plus interesting historical data! Incidentally, I took a total of 1409 pics over the weekend of May 15 & 16 at just one place. And I took 551 fotos at one place just this last Saturday, May 29. I'm now faced with tons of postwork to keep me occupied and sleepless for eons.

Quite gorgeous! I would have taken at least as many pictures there as you did, and I hope to see as many as you can post! There is a sense of history in this photo, something that sort of vibrates out of the stonework, the shape of the lamp, and the "old growth" trees in the park. Of course there's a lot of modern activity taking place, but you've captured the whole vibe of a historically-significant place, a beautiful park, and a lovely stretch of city. I love every element of this photo, and I find the information intriguing. OH, the things left out of history books! Well...maybe not left out, but definitely glossed over. I really love this, particularly the feeling of mass and aged dignity! Yeah, this rocks!
