The coots are medium-sized water birds belonging to the rail family. They are the kind Fulica.
The greater variety of species found in South America and it is likely that this genus originated there.
These rails have an almost completely black plumage and, unlike many rails are usually easy to see, since they often swim in open water rather than hiding in the undergrowth.
