Description
Blue hydrangeas and wild Rhododendron (R. ponticum) can be seen all over Cornwall. I took this image on the Clay Trails walk, but just about anywhere you go here, you will not be out of sight of these Rhododendron.
Unfortunately, those that graced the Luxulyan Valley, are no more.
The disease, Phytophthora ramorum (also known as Sudden Oak Death) and Phytophthora kernoviae has struck with a vengeance so all Rhododendron anywhere near Beech or any other of our native trees have been destroyed. I must admit it's very strange indeed to walk in the valley without seeing these magnificent plants.
On a brighter note, the plants not close to trees still grow in profusion, as on the Clay Trails, and I am hoping, given enough time, they will begin to fight back against this nasty disease. And if course, because the undergrowth is now clear, saplings with be given the chance to establish themselves without having to fight for space. Isn't it grand that there is always a good side to everything!! ^=^
Thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^

That is amazing that these introduced acid loving plants are doing so well on clay! Here the wild ones are a nuisance, pushing out native species as nothing will grow under them! We have regular 'culls', especially where they are trying to establish themselves on our precious heaths. But there are still enough to give us magnificent shows: There are pros and cons for letting foreign species run wild!

Well presented! We have few in the wild here and they tend to be much smaller. I have some trouble with capturing this color - Excellent photo

Well seen and presented.

Gorgeous! There aren't many wild ones here, and the ones we do have are native to the area and grow in the woods, so they don't take over. This must be a sight to see!!
