Description
After Cordoba had fallen to the Moors in 711, the conquerers shared the Visigoth church of San Vicente with the Christian population. This church occupied the site of what is now the mosque and where it is thought that a Roman temple dedicated to the sun once stood. The church soon became to small due to the rapid expansion of the city's population and in the year 786 Abderramin 1st bought the Christian section after which a splendid mosque was erected in a matter of just a few years. The original mosque consisted of 11 longitudinal and 12 transversal aisles.
