Description

Oggi ancora una farfalla del gruppo Pieridae : Colias chrysotheme Even today a group of butterfly Pieridae: Colias chrysotheme The Pieridae Duponchel, 1832, better known as "cabbage", are surpassing the 1000 case, one of the largest families of butterflies, belonging to the superfamily Papilionoidea (Latreille, 1802 Description They are characterized by white, yellow or orange, probably due to the presence of pterin pigment, found only in this family of butterflies. Staining is often accompanied by basic stains of different color and position depending on the species, and often the individual's sex (sexual dimorphism). All six legs are well developed and functioning in both sexes, with tarsal claws bifid. The antennas are very thin and have well developed antennal clubs, oblong, compressed on the sides, and sometimes a different color than the remaining antennal segments. The wings have a characteristic arrangement of veins, and is especially evident the birth of VI front wing vein directly from the radial outgoing branch from the cell (2 'and 3' from the radial veins fused together), rather than from the base branch as in the Lycaenidae, or a different branch always outgoing side of the cell as in the Papilionidae and the presence on the wing rear of a single anal vein as in the Papilionidae, family indeed closely related with the evolutionary Pieridae. Long-eggs are the shape of a pin, usually marked with grooves, laid singly or in groups. The caterpillars are cylindrical in shape with a diameter more or less homogeneous, and often with hairs more or less developed and disseminated. Palaearctic species of the region are fed mainly on plants belonging to the families of Cruciferae, Leguminosae and Capparidaceae. The pupae have a centrally excrescence corniforme anterior head. They are generally brief and stick to the host plant or other type of media suitable for use through a silk band. The Palaearctic region that presents the only Pieridae pupae abandoned land belong to the genus Zegris. Distribution The Pieridae have worldwide distribution, but there are many more taxa in the tropics, and in the temperate zone. In Europe and Italy are mainly sub Pierinae and Coliadinae with kinds Pieris, Pontia, and Anthocharis Colias and many other less numerous.
