Description

This is a group of US Navy Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King Anti-submarine warfare helicopters, part of my HS-5 helicopter squadron, stationed at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, USA. We were flying over Block Island. The empty foundation, under the nose of the lead helicopter, is the remains of a grand old hotel that had burned down a few nights before. Block Island is part of the US state of Rhode Island and is located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 13 miles (21 km) south of the coast of Rhode Island and 14 miles (23 km) east of Montauk Point on Long Island. An average of about 1,000 permanent residents, live on the island’s 9.7 square miles (25.2 km2). The only town on the island was New Shoreham. The Block Island info came from Wikipedia. Photo taken in 1967, with a hand held Navy camera and recently scanned. I posted this as a snapshot since there is no way for me to be sure that I actually took this specific shot, although I took thousands. Excellent POV in this old scanned foto of the helicopters flying in formation, Dana! Looks like a recruitment poster. I like the blur of the rotor blades, which gives it a feeling of action. And it looks like the aftermath of a bombing raid below.
