Description
Found this fellow on the window sill. I'm amazed at how complex these little critters are. Most of the time I would just splat it with a newspaper without a thought, now I'm beginning to see their beauty it's making me more aware. Photography as the path to enlightenment, who'd have thought?

Yep, they have some of the most complex mouths of all flies. Nice shot.

Praise indeed NightGallery. I hope to eventually create some macros as beautiful as yours. Getting the light right is tricky, this was using a flash gun diffused through a sandwich tub.

He looks a little peaked but oh so well photographed. :-)

These guys always remind me of skinny, long-legged versions of aliens known as the Mondowashan in the film, The Fifth Element. I think it's their head shape and their muscular, bulging thorax. They're such elegant insects, known in parts of the USA as "Gollywhoppers." Their larvae are known as "Leatherjackets." Such funny names for such gorgeous creatures. And yeah, photography is one of the many paths to enlightenment, especially in terms of insects. I've always loved insects and other small, multi-legged critters, and photography has provided me with numerous excuses to encourage them to hang around my place of residence. It's often hilarious to explain (patiently) to a neighbor that liver pate you've just smeared onto a stick is intended to serve as bait for rather photogenic flies that'll soon clean (and polish) the stick in question. I love this shot, especially since the gollywhopper in question has its mouth parts nicely extended!
