Description

Delia's land hosts a hoopoe, Upupa in Italian, which was kind enough to let me take a shot. I'm still waiting for the response on my PC, and I'm currently working on Flavia's old one, we use as a last hope reserve. The Hoopoe or Upupa epops, is a colourful bird that is found across Afro-Eurasia, notable for its distinctive crown of feathers. The Hoopoe is a medium sized bird, 25–32 cm (9.8-12.6 in) long, with a 44–48 cm (17.3–19 in) wingspan weighing 46-89 g (1.6-3.1 oz). The species is highly distinctive, with a long, thin tapering bill. It has a characteristic undulating flight, which is like that of a giant butterfly, and the song is a trisyllabic 'oop-oop-oop', which gives rise to its English and scientific names. Hoopoes are distinctive birds and have made a cultural impact over much of their range. They were considered sacred in Ancient Egypt and symbols of virtue in Persia. In the Bible they were listed among the animals that should not be eaten. They were thought of as thieves across much of Europe and harbingers of war in Scandinavia. Also, in Estonian tradition the Hoopoes are strongly connected with death and the underworld, their song is seen as a forebode of death for many a people or cattle. The Hoopoe was chosen as the national bird of the State of Israel in May 2008 in conjunction with the country's 60th anniversary, outpolling the White-spectacled Bulbul. It is also the state-bird of Punjab province of India. Thank you for your kind comments.

What an amazing bird and interesting information on it! I've never seen one of these, but then being from the USA it's no wonder. They don't live on this side of the Atlantic, unless they're in zoos. What a marvelous creature and a perfect capture. It's funny, it looks a bit like a prehistoric flying lizard with that crest of feathers! I don't know if I'd regard them as harbingers of anything bad, but it's nice to see that they figure into so many traditions. I'd love to hear them. I like eerie sounding birds! This is a superb capture, and I hope that soon your computer stuff is resolved!

Wonderful capture of a most unusual bird! I find the cultural differences between North and South very interesting. Treasured and protected in the Middle East, shunned and hated in Northern Europe.
