Description
Funny how things happen.
A friend of mine is a Hot Rod nut! He is starting an on-line store specializing in custom parts for hod rodders who work on cars from the late 40's and 50'. He wondered if I may be able to do a pin-up reflecting the period and mentioned a Bettie ... a Bettie Page.
Yes, I had heard of her, but was born a good 25 years too late to have ever seen her... at least when I was old enough for it to mean much.
so I decided to do a little research.
An interesting Gal, our Bettie was. She became known as the "Queen of Pinups" and though she started in the late 40's - her hay day was in the 50's. Culminating with being one of the first Playboy pin-ups and the cover girls for that magazine's Feb. 1955.
Known for her raven hair, milk white skin, and an extremely curvaceous form, Betty had everything needed to be come a quick success.
Years were not always good for glamorous photo shoots and the college trained (teacher) model made much of her income selling mail order photo's. These started as vanilla pinups but quickly led to sadomasochistic bondage themes. She was also in a number of silent featurettes showing women clad in lingerie and high heels acting out fetishistic scenarios of abduction, domination, and slave-training with bondage, spanking, and elaborate leather costumes and restraints.
Betty went back and forth between the two worlds; of the glamorous pinups... and things a little seedier for most of her career. Though she often would pose nude, Bettie never was involved in any sexually explicit scenes.
In 1958 she became a born again Christian and was extremely active in many missions and Christian causes in the 1960's and started working for the Reverend Billy Graham in 1963.
Bettie was very prone to mood swings and depression and spent some extended periods in psychiatric hospitals.
From her retirement in the late 50's she received little attention until the 1980's and 90's where there was a strong nostalgic resurgence of her work.
Betties Page died in 2008 at the age of 85.
--------------------
V4 a new custom morph and texture tried to get the face close to hers... the scene is a complete fabrication and is made from 4-5 different photo's including those killer cars.
The lighting was time consuming and involve over 20 light sources with shadow maps. Various elements and hair highlights painted in. The postwork was to emulate a feel for the period.
In any case, I hope you like her.

WOOOOOOOW! VERY cool image Rick! And not just because of the fabulous artwork. The accompanying information is an excellent read. Glad you gave us a color version too. I too was born too later to know who Betty Page was. In fact, though I had seen pictures of her in passing over the years I really knew nothing about her until recently. Thanks for the superbly beautiful image and commentary. Excellent work!!
