Description

Motokamishii's Zero approaches the Akagi. The other planes are the Val, Kate and Zero I built for the ship. Barely detectable are a couple of dozen crewmen on the ship. I used ThundeRRenderS's lo-res Vogel Einz characters, retextured, and a Japanese sailor cap by Siosai. The destroyer is also by Siosai. The aircraft did, indeed, make this close a turn on approach (carrier pilots are a breed apart), but that's not the interesting part. Akagi and the Japanese carrier Hiryu had their islands on the port side, so the landing pattern was clockwise instead of counter-clockwise as on all other carriers. The idea was that pairs (Akagi/Kaga & Hiryu/Soryu) could operate in close consort without their returning planes interfering with each other. Because of the tendency of pilots to vere to the left in an emergency, this led to more landing accidents on Akagi and Hiryu. The plan was later abandoned for this reason. Poser 6/Vue 8.

Nice image. Could be a photo. Thanks for the info regarding the starboard - port design of the carriers islands. I can just about make out the people on deck. How much have you shrunk them, or, what camera parameters have you used to get such a long shot? This makes me quite curious as to how you set up your maritime scenes (ships are very big compared to people). Keep up the good work! :)

Outstanding carrier operations imagery!!! That is a great observation about the Japanese island posistion. I believe the first carrier HMS Furious (converted large cruiser in 1917, island added in the 30's) had it's island on the starboard side. The Sopwith camel's engine right torque had pilots always turn left after takeoff. Super naval aviation work you have going on in your gallery!!!
