My corporeal form lives with my wonderful wife and six eccentric cats in beautiful Sedgefield, but my dreaming body is frequently elsewhere, exploring the fractal universe and marveling at nature's chaos. I love traveling to places that exist only as mathematical constructs on my computer and bringing back snapshots that sometimes remind me of the real world (whatever that means), sometimes of metamagical worlds we can visit only in our imaginations. I trained as a biologist and run a small company specialising in science publishing - writing, editing, illustrating and typesetting. For 3D world building I use Vue, Daz Studio and Poser, but I've also used Bryce since version 2 and done some work with Terragen, Carrara and Groboto. For technical illustration I use mainly Illustrator and Photoshop.
Thanks for visiting my little corner of Renderosity, and to everyone who has kindly commented on my images or added my works as a favourite, thank you for that too. Craig.

Stunning. This isn't a photograph, it's a construction & render in software, but that makes it all the more beautiful because it has such stunning photographic elements in it. The detailing in the mountain foreground---the 'plateau', ie, where the geologists are studying---is breathtakingly done, with gorgeous lines, sweeps, highlights & shadows. You show the natural striations of rock throughout, and the mid-ground (where the peaks are) is equally articulated & beautiful. Your light & shadow beautiful & textured---something a photographer can capture, but only with the greatest amount of setup & (usually) postwork. You, however, created it all, and that verifies your respect for the physical world, no doubt enhanced by your years as a scientist. Then, the farther peaks, ending in the usual blue haze true to atmosphere on mountains, are another contrast, taking us to increasing light as we move back into the image. It all ends, of course, in a diffuse white-blue sky...I don't know anything about "fractal terrains," as I'm just beginning to learn fractals (and trust me, the results would put most insects to sleep). But whatever you did to achieve your striations & swirls of geological strata, you not only produced something believable, but quite beautiful. It's a beautiful image, and you captured the strange presence of researchers who work & go anywhere to gather their insights & data, including breathtaking desolation like this. Beautiful. A great render, Craig. Terrific Vue work.

If I could walk thru something like this, I would be here every day. Impressive work. Aloha

From the look of it, that would be a fine tutorial to follow. Excellent work. Like the mist. It really adds much to the image

Awesome work Craig. The scale is amazing.

FANTASTIC IMAGE!!

This is a most excellent, beautifully photorealistic image! I love the mountainous terrain--and it looks to be a geologist's heaven with those rock strata visible in the distance...layers revealed through both geological and meteorological processes. Yeah, that's quite nice! This is a lovely and relaxing image and it makes me think of a Geologist I came to know back in college. I loved to hear his stories and to get a feel of his passion for rocks...and oceanography too! This image brings all of that back and it's a stunning image. One of the things I love about science fiction is the SCIENCE part of it: the plausability, the awareness of how known scientific principles and natural laws might come into play in both this world and any possible world, and this image displays that wonderfully! I don't know where this place is, but it's believable, and on top of that, evocative. This is really great work! I especially like the stark quality; it could read as barren, but I don't actually see it as that. I doubt a geologist would, either, and that's what really works in this image. It gets into another headspace, and allows the viewers to do the same...and the writer in me is wondering who the geologists are? Are they actually on Earth or are they elsewhere? What are they learning? Yeah, the questions go on and on, and each of them is as compelling as the image that inspires them. This rocks...
