Description

On my morning inspection of the garden, well the dogs actually. He likes to check that his toys are till there and that no interlopers have trespassed on his patch, I spotted this creature. My minimal research on the web came up with: A Vapourer Moth Caterpillar. Only about 10mm long but scary through a macro lens. Apparently the female moths cannot fly, and have to attract a male, who can fly, to her. Well whatdyaknow, you do learn something new everyday.

Great shot, nice colors in this one. Are those red things on it mites? Or part of its natural colors?

This is very similar to the rather extravagant tussock moth larvae we get here in Chicago, complete with those shaving brushes on their backs. The larvae in question here, however, are lighter in color with candy-apple red heads, black Las Vegas showgirl hairs, and all around extravagance. This, though similar, seems a bit more restrained, and probably far more polite! This is superb work, really intriguing. Caterpillars are such fascinating creatures, especially when they're this gaudy and eye-grabbing! This is a perfect shot!
