You're leaving us out of this. We are the ones who need the products that are made from what is brought up from the Earth. Lubricants, gasoline, plastics, all come from oil. Modern civilization can't function without it.

The story was about someone that found a valve at the North Pole. the story tells nothing about what is this valve, only describe it and deep sound coming from beneath and a hiss escaping the valve. Nobody dared to open the valve and see what happens... The story tells nothing, but is a clear metaphor where the Earth is a balloon and the valve is in the balloon's mouth. I am not 100% sure if is from Ray Bradbury, if is not Bradbury then is Lovecraft, never mind, keep BP and the Greenies far away from the valve.
