I remember hearing of a concept where that's how scientists wanting to bring asteroids for mining to Earth.

C.J.Cherryh had a whole concept for mining the asteroid belt in the book "Heavy Time". The ships were basically mass drivers. They stayed out five years breaking up asteroids tagged by independant miners and firing them at jupiter ( I think ) to be caught in it's pull. From there they were collected by "Shepheards" and processed in orbital refineries.
