Description

This is a curious one, we don't have any day flying bats in the UK. Yet I saw this flying around in full sun on a glorious day. In a woodland opening over a stream I stood on the bridge and fired off about 50 shots trying to get it in flight. There was only one bat, I put the only two reconisable images together to make it more interesting. I hoped someone from the UK wildlife may know what is going on. It was a small species about pippastrel size I thought. I had to enlarge the shots so quality is not special!

nice and interesting pic! i hsve seen bats flying in bright sunshine on spring mornings, i assumed it was because they needed to compensate for cold nights and fatten up for breeding...?

We have several large colonies of bats here and many living in our downtown area. We are told, if you see them during the day, they are most probably sick so avoid contact. They are a high risk for carrying rabies.

A most unusual sighting! Maybe they've been into the fermented fruit. ;)

Very unusual sighting and well photographed with the sun coming through his wings. I hope it wasn't a sick one.

How did I miss this! I have seen bats fly only once in daylight and that was in Devon when at Berry Pomeroy castle. In that case it was a Pipistrelle. Apparently though, this species of bat will often fly during the day. Fantastic capture. ^=^

Nice picture. "Luck favors the prepared mind," or a well armed photographer. Cool reaction on your part. Great shot.
