Another hdri-test.
I made this laserpointer a few months ago, but never got a really realistic render. Now i do :).
Rendering took 60min. on my Athlon 900 with 512MB ram.
I have some trouble with the ugly gray spots (shadow) on the ground. I've tried almost anything, but it would only increase rendertime and it still lokked the same. Then I just left it as it is.

WOW! Plz tell how you did the hdri - is it just an image in the luminance channel or what? There's much discussion going on with HDRI and C4D but I haven't found a convincing method for faking High Dynamic Range Images in Cinema. The spotty shadows could be a lack of samples if you used radiosity..

I used the hdri-method from http://www.rain.org/~msavard/hdri/Articles/UsingHDRIs.html and I turned 'specular' OFF at all the materials. My radiosity sample settings are 8/12 (min/max), that's a bit low, but if I turn them up, it takes ages for the picture to render. Maybe if I won't use the computer for a day I will render it with more samples.

Hi! Good work. Often high settings of Resolution take less time than low ones. E.g. Min=1000 Max=2000 accuracy=70% instead of Min=100 Max=500, acc.=40% C4D needs much time to find appropriate spots at low settings. That eats up much of rendertime. MCML

If you want to increase the shadow depth where the object nears the ground, you can use a dome of hard lights. They use hardlights to generate the effect of an object that sits on the ground.
