what popped into my mind was a bridge too far operation market garden,when the allied troops landed in the netherlands as to force a way through the german lines a disastrous operation by the way ,a lot of men lost . the movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Bridge_Too_Far_%28film%29 the history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Market_Garden maybe a nice lecture for you mike lol.
