Description

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you It's strange what desire will make foolish people do I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you What a wicked game to play, to make me feel this way What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you -Chris Isaak
I hope everyone is looking forward to a calm and inspired weekend.  For those living Stateside, may you find find and enjoy some creative freedom on this Independence holiday! A few notes about the craft behind these seeming poser paintings I have been exhibiting recently: Yesterday Alicia (Sepiasiren) wrote: "I would ask "How do u do that" but each artist has their process and I wouldn't want to reveal mine." It's pretty much the same process I have been using all along: many interwoven layers in Photoshop.  The difference, with the painted effect, is produced by building up a textured feel utilizing filters.  The following description is from one of my first portraits in this style.
The "painted" effect was produced in Photoshop utilizing default filters, a few dabs from a large watercolor brush across the background and a great number of layers woven together through blend mode.  The actual filters used were Dry Brush, Paint Daubs and Underpainting.  The canvas texture was produced with the Texturizer filter; scaling at about 95% with relief at 1 and sometimes 2. It might be easier to produce such a result with a program or plugin designed for just this kind of postwork; I don't know.  I always work with multiple layers in this manner because I like to adjust just about every portion of an image until something starts coming together that pleases my eyes.  I do not always achieve such a happy outcome and there are more than a few folders stuffed with unfinished works I may or may not get back to finishing one day.
I have found that this process forces me to rely upon rules and guidances of traditional painting rather than photography which is my professional background.  It has been an interesting experience developing these painted portraits and the "studies" for the Spartacus series.  I have had to stretch beyond what I know and am comfortable with which has taught me some new techniques I would not have learned otherwise. If anyone is interested I can try to explain the process in a little more depth. With warmest regard, Terry     The image below will take you to Dear, Tender Charlie which is a variation of above portrait.        thumb_2015900.jpg

Love the image and the explanation of how its created! I am in agreement with the little Poser girl, its quite the wicked thing to get someone to love you only to walk away... But then too its kind of sad to think that you love someone only to find out it was heartburn... get your Zantac ready!!! ;D Until the next...

TetsuTora: "often I find photoshop filters are badly used or over done." Agreed.  This is also true of the one-click-wonder programs and plugins.  In an ideal world, filters or any technique should accentuate the primary subject and message of a work.  Any effect that distracts from the intent of a piece, to show off its own qualities, diminishes the strength of a work. In some of these textured portraits I have used 20 to 25 additional layers just to generate the painted effect.  The process is very much like building up layers of paint on canvas until your eyes tell you the result looks right. It's good to see you back!  I take it you'll be stickin' around a while then?  That's good!  ;-) Terry

First off, She's Just Plain Beautiful. Jaw Drop, knock me over with a feather beautiful. And she'd be beautiful with any effects or lack thereof. Second, she's expressive. Reach out and grab the viewer expressive. The image is a home run. As someone who considers himself not quite yet good enough to be novice I find the information fascinating and will be attempting some of that in the future myself. (Probably without posting.) Anyway, thanks for the image and the insight. jd

Thanks for telling us how you do that - i was curious about that as well. Don't see anything wicked about this girl, which is a good thing, i think.

I'm so glad you didn't use filters for this. I think by using the layers and adjusting as you went along you propelled this to a much higher level. Gorgeous and so softly touchable. I love the slightly sad expression and the way you made it appear painted just adds so much to it.
