Nymphaea L. 1753 è un genere di piante Spermatofite appartenenti alla famiglia delle Nymphaeaceae dai fiori acquatici molto grandi e decorativi.
La famiglia delle Nymphaeaceae non è numerosa, insieme alla famiglia delle Cabombaceae comprende 6 generi con 68 specie[1]; mentre il genere Nymphaea comprende circa 50 specie a distribuzione cosmopolita, preferendo comunque climi temperato-caldi delle regioni extra-tropicali dell'emisfero boreale. Nella flora spontanea italiana è presente una sola specie (Nymphaea alba).

Sul territorio italiano è presente una sola specie di questo genere :
• Nymphaea alba L. - Ninfea comune : è una pianta la cui altezza varia da 20 a 200 cm; il ciclo biologico è perenne; la forma biologica è idrofita radicante (I rad); il tipo corologico è Eurasiatico; l'habitat tipico sono le acque stagnanti; la diffusione sul territorio italiano è completa fino ad una altitudine di 1500 m s.l.m..
Eventualmente all'estremo est della zona alpina può essere presente la seguente specie :
• Nymphaea candida Presl. - Ninfea candida : differisce dalla Nymphaea alba soprattutto per i filamenti staminali più larghi. È una pianta la cui altezza varia da 50 a 160 cm; il ciclo biologico è perenne; la forma biologica è idrofita radicante (I rad); il tipo corologico è Eurosiberiano; l'habitat tipico sono le acque stagnanti. Questa pianta è diffusa nella Carinzia e alcune province austriache più a nord, quindi occasionalmente potrebbe trovarsi nella vicina provincia di Udine.

Nymphaea L. 1753 is a genus of plants belonging to the family of Spermatophytes Nymphaeaceae aquatic very large flowers and decorative.
The family Nymphaeaceae is not large, together with the family of Cabombaceae includes 6 genera with 68 species [1], while the genus Nymphaea contains about 50 species of cosmopolitan distribution, it prefers warm-temperate regions of extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere . In the Italian wild flowers is one species (Nymphaea alba).
Wild species of the Italian territory [edit]
Italian territory is only one species of this genus:
• Nymphaea alba L. - Joint Water Lily is a plant whose height varies from 20 to 200 cm, the life cycle is perennial, the organic form is rooting hydrophytes (I rad) is the type chorological Eurasian, the typical habitat is stagnant waters, the spread on the Italian territory is complete up to an altitude of 1500 m above sea level.
Possibly the extreme east of the alpine zone may be present, the following species:
• Nymphaea candida Presl. - White waterlily: differs from Nymphaea alba especially for larger filament stem. It is a plant whose height varies from 50 to 160 cm, the life cycle is perennial, the organic form is rooting hydrophytes (I rad) is the type chorological Eurosiberiano, the typical habitat is stagnant waters. This plant is widespread in some Austrian provinces of Carinthia and further north, and occasionally could be found in the neighboring province of Udine.
