Description

Before the dawn of European civilization, a maiden dwelled in the ruins of an ancient stone castle--the Moon Maiden. She was called the Moon Maiden because of her purity, and because of her mystical powers, which she drew from the Moon. The Moon Maiden was a healer, a compassionate ageless girl...never to become a woman...who helped those in need with her healing skills and white magick...good magick. The Moon Maiden knew, instinctively, that she'd never mate. Once her purity disappeared, her power would disappear along with it. The Moon Maiden was desired by many men but she waved them all away, with a flick of her wrist. Selfless creature that she was, she chose to retain her power to help others over physical gratification. Some say she never died. That she's still alive today, living in the ruins of the ancient castle, wearing the colors of the Moon in her long black hair. Some say they've even glimpsed her, with her ivory skin and raven hair, mixing potions, humming to herself as she waits for nightfall and the appearance of the Moon. Don't look for her too hard though because I made every word of this story up. ;-) Thanks for looking! Jan

Beautiful portrait. Don't be too sure you made it up all the way. Stories like this are in almost all the "old" pre-christian cultures in Europe. The monks and priests of the late middle ages (around the time of the protestant rising) tired to kill of those stories but never really succeeded. So even your story has it's echos on the folklore around in Europe.

Very nice story and image! I have heard of stories similar but not the same before in folklore not only in Europe but also in many South American countries.

Thanks for the comments, you guys. :-) Well, they say there are archetypes (sp?) up "there," so maybe an archetype spoke to me. ;-) Or maybe I read a story similiar to that somewhere and it floated up from my subconscious. It's kind of ironic. The character has a pregnancy inj. I meant to make her Mother Earth, all full and pregnant, but she insisted on being the Moon Maiden. So I just sighed and followed my muse. I also thought about making the lighting darker, since she is the Moon Maiden, but darker lighting, unless I'd gotten the spotlight just right, would've ruined the pretty pale skin on the character. I wanted to show that off. So I put a cool set of lights on her for the moon and added warm set to put a bit of color in her face, so she wouldn't looked too washed out. (Thanks to Rogerbee at DAZ for telling me how to mix two light sets in Poser!) Anyhow, had fun doing it and I may look up some of those legends! :-) Thank you again for commenting. Jan
