Description
"Tramonte alla fontana"...sunset at the fountain...is the secret code passed on tiny slips of paper between Lorenzo, the Duke of Galeassi, (better known as "Testarossa") and his mistress as a signal of a discreet meeting between the two.
Testarossa, a man of great ambition, has no ordinary mistress...she is Elisabetta Maria Concetta, the Contessa Bellaventura. The Conte Bellaventura, her husband, is a rival of Testarossa, and Testarossa is quite pleased with himself for secretly cuckolding the count by bedding his wife.
Elisabetta, however, is truly in love with Lorenzo (she never uses the name Testarossa for her beloved), blinded in her love to all his plotting and unscrupulous dealings.
This sunset meeting is not one that will have a pleasant ending with the two secreting away to their love nest, for Testarossa's wife has returned unexpectedly to the city from their country villa. The Duchessa Galeassi is a formidable and wealthy woman and one Testarossa needs to keep...for now. Therefore his lovely mistress must remain a secret from her, and hence no lovers tryst with her tonight.
We observe the couple as they are turning to leave each other. Elisabetta, with a longing look back in disappointment for the time lost with her love. Testarossa is upset that his plans have been foiled by his wife...and perhaps senses a little disappointment that he will not spend the evening with Elisabetta....but no....such feelings are for weaker men than the Duke of Galeassi...or are they?
