Description
The Leopold Park flower clock in Oostende, Belgium (Yes, it still exists!)
Who wears a watch when they're on holiday, especially at the seaside with all that water and sand? A few hundred yards from the beach you will find this clock to tell you the time.
In a town in another province less than 100 miles away they intend to rename an avenue called Leopold II Ave, because this King of Belgium had some awful things done in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) back in the 19th Century. Some contend the Brits were jealous, and Joseph Conrad (writing "Heart of Darkness") was ill-informed.
Belgium gave only token attendance to the DRC's 50th anniversary this year, and has barred Congolese battalions from marching in their 21st July National Independence Day festivities.
On n'est pas des amis.
