Description

If there is a Czech connection, I think of Chip (chipka) and all his tales set in that fascinating country. So, bear with me for a moment to tell you about what the pilot in the photo above is doing in his Russian Yak-55 aerobatic plane at last Sunday's airshow. Oh, and this is the son from a father-son aerobatic team...more on them in a later post. A Lomcovak is an aerobatic maneuver that can be performed by an aeroplane. The word originates from the Czechoslovakian aerobatic pilot Ladislav Bezak's mechanic, who at a 1958 air show in Brno, Czechoslovakia jokingly called Bezak's tumble maneuvres "Lomcovaks" when asked by journalists what they were. According to Miroslav A. Liskutin, a Czechoslovak fighter pilot, veteran of the RAF, this maneuver was flown by himself and other pilots on Bucker Bu 131 Jungmann/Aero C-4 biplanes at early post-WWII period air shows around Czechoslovakia and it was called "talirek" (small saucer) due to the horizontal rotary movement of the aircraft. "Lomcovak" translated into English, roughly means "cause of a headache" or "hangover". The expression "Lomcovak" originated from the Moravia region, famous for its Jelinek slivovitz, a traditional Czechoslovakian alcohol, and is commonly used to describe the rotating motions of one who has had one too many. Bill:) P.S. I had to remove all the proper Czech markings over various letters because I could not get them to hold once uploaded...they simply caused all sorts of havoc and rendered my text above unreadable...and you'd have thought I had one too many slivovitz! WOOOW! It looks scary to me but it is a fabulous capture. Untill now, I have not been able to take one single decent shot of flying object. You do it brilliantly.

Great capture of this seemingly-dangerous maneuver; I'm so glad I'm not in that plane!

I'm with Carin ... I'm coming back later to see what Chip has to say about all this! LOL! The shot is excellent ... you've really got the feel of what the plane was doing, and that's not easy! Planes in the air tend to look like planes in the air, and this one actually looks like it's MOVING through the air. Excellent capture!!

WOW! Tý volé!!! What a shot and THANK YOU for the dedication! This is quite stunning in every respect! I love aircraft, though I have little knowledge of them: for me a plane in the air looks like a plane in the air, but oh, how impressive! I'm more of a jet sort of a guy, but prop-driven beauties are just as fascinating, just not as arrowhead-sleek. I'm also amazed that you captured this particular maneuver without ending up with a plane shaped blur. I'm well familiar with the whole Lomcovak concept, because of that rocket fuel known as slivovice. It's actually kinda good, in that plum-flavored rocket fuel sort of way; it's great for starting a barbecue as well...don't use lighter fluid, just get someone to break into their store of home-distilled slivovice, and donate a shot-glass of it. Of course they'll give you TWO shots...one to start the fire, and the other to make you wobbly! There's an old story about that stuff, and a guy who was painting the ceiling in his house when Soviet tanks rolled through town, hell-bent on conquest...or something. As he was painting, his wife kept giving him shots of that rocket fuel that Czechs euphemistically call "plum brandy." Oh wait, it actually IS brandy, I think. Anyway, the guy was already snockered (from slivovice and probably beer chasers) but was utterly steady on the ladder...when he climbed down from the ladder though, everything became wobbly (because of the tanks, but he didn't know that.) It's said that he actually missed seeing the Soviet Invasion, because the Slivovice levels in his bloodstream were high enough to cause...um...well...drunkenness. Strangely enough, he apparently remained on that ladder--quite steadily--until a substantial time later. I have no idea what this has to do with your post, but there you have it. Oh, and the Brno connection is kinda cool too. My friend Pavl lives there now...and Brno is the punch line of the first (and only) Czech joke that I learned. This is a great shot, and now that I've gushed on and on about stuff...I'm gonna just go on and press SUBMIT. Great stuff! Oh, and just so you'll know, Tý volé!!! doesn't actually translate well into English. It's probably the most common Czech-language emphatic and it has various meanings depending on context. Literally, the term means "you bull" but for some reason, it's used in a range of situations; it's often said as an emphatic expressing amazement, much like "Wow!" It could also be a playfully rude term of endearment among friends, OR it can take on more crude, biologically-significant meanings. It's a phrase you hear everywhere in the Czech Republic.

Thank you for the opportunity to Czech out this Russian aircraft performing an amazing maneuver, spewing a trail of smoke for added impact, Bill. And I see Chipka came out with another book for his commentary. Incidentally, both my sister-in-law and nephew are of Czech origin, meaning they were born in the Czech Republic and emigrated to the USA.

A fine action composition...does he have a licence for that ? A very cool-looking stall maneuver - the pilots are so skilled to recover from this seemingly out of control position, I wouldn't like to try that myself. AB-FAB capture, BB
