"Ship's log, May 17, 1768: Not a breath of wind. Sea is flat. Not pond flat; flat and grey as a pewter serving tray. Visibility not a hundred yards in any direction. But wait - something moves in the fog to the nor'east, some other vessel. How, with no wind? The fog thins, I can make out ... Saints preserve us!" (Log ends)
