Description
I spent June working on four paintings of Joleen and her mother Sari.
They're finally done so here they come.
Still trying to get Joleen to model once more, a slow motion task. I swear glaciers move faster.
In the meantime, I have a lot of photos to work from.
This one began as photo of her in shorts and halter. I started off laying it out as a straight nude.
That hit a creative dead end.
Then I got to thinking of making her a sleeping Gorgon. The problem there was the serpentine hair would have thrown the balance too far to the right.
The gorgon aspect then triggered the idea of making her a statue. So, there we are!
Caryatids are the statues of women that serve as columns in Grecian or Roman architecture.
Rodin did a statue "Caryatid Who Has Fallen Under Her Load."
That was a favorite of Robert Heinlein and appears on the original hardcover of STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, which is where I learned the word.

Excellent reference and a nice piece of art here. "Stranger" put me on the search for Rodin's works myself and I've enjoyed the research of them. Good luck in the future of your modeling requests.
