Description

The courtyard/pool area is the center piece of the living areas. To distinguish the different areas, facades were used. This store front is from the 15th century and is of French origin. Because most people living during the Middle Ages could not read or write, the professions of the shop owners would be carved, in a pictorial manner, on the fronts of their buildings or hanging signs over the door. In this case the lower floor depicts the meat market of a butcher, as indicated by the carvings, above the door and along the window frames. This door led into Hammond's Invention Room, where many of his inventions are on display, such the guidance system for the US Navy's torpedoes, the silent propellers use on their submarines and his dynamic amplifier (today's stereo) system which is the size of a refrigerator. The second floor: carved grapes adorn the windows revealing that the upstairs most likely housed a wine merchant or tavern. This is also indicated by the upper figures, which each hold a musical instrument, from that period. The upstairs room was the "American"decorated bedroom and above that the servants quarters, behind the facades roof. The servant's quarters did not have windows opening on the private courtyard. For more details on the Hammond Castle, read the info on my July 6, 2010 posting. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Very interesting information to go along with this keen image, which depicts all the intricate architecture, patterns and textures of this portion of the castle, Dana. Mr Hammond was most talented.
